Synchronicity

Every now and then in my life, when the time is so often out of joint (probably due to my less-than-steller organizational skills and self-discipline), I get a little gift of synchronicity. Some time ago, I blogged a bit on William Shatner and his musings on parenthood. This morning, while waiting on the kindness of internet strangers for more internet goodies related to the penultimate Doctor Who cliff-hanger, I checked my "recommended" page at YouTube and found this surreal rendition of Pulp's Common People featuring William Shatner reciting the lyrics with vocal back-up by Joe Jackson, plus Ben Folds on the keyboards:
Good Lord.

And what do I find in the video response section for this? A Doctor Who fan-vid set to the original Pulp recording of Common People. It's a competent effort (I much prefer the original video which was one of the last music videos I clearly recall enjoying), but it's rather fun to see Rose smiling smugly to the line "Everybody hates a tourist, especially when he thinks it's all such a laugh", so in honour of those excited over Rose's return over the final three episodes of this season (which doesn't include me -- although I'm perfectly pleased to see her back), I include it here:

I actually love this video. I used to be a huge Joe Jackson fan back in the early 80s when I was living in New York City. I once sat for an evening at the bar of the Ear Inn in Tribeca next to Joe Jackson. He was just there relaxing and having a few drinks. He put out some great music in his day - takes me back! thanks!

Thanks for dropping by! I'm not an enormous fan of Joe Jackson, but he certainly sings "Common People" very well! I've been searching in vain for a music video he did in the eighties. The song was forgettable (at least by me!), but I loved the video which featured Joe sharing a house with a bevy of super-models. It showed them all doing chores, fighting for the bathroom, watching television... It was really quite funny and charming.

Oh that's hilarious. I love William Shatner...
Never afraid to send himself up.

I also love Rose, but I fear she's never going to get her moment in the sun with the doc. All say, aaah...

My children have pronounced her the Ultimate Companion.

The synchronicity spreads...

I came here following a link you'd posted on 'the bedside crow' to a Leningrad Cowboys vidlink I'd sent Jon...(bear with me here)...

Jarvis mentions Saint Martins early in "Common People", which is where I work (now Central Saint Martins); & your last comment was on my birthday...

CGJ would be proud.

Happy belated birthday, Jamie! Your comment came in twice, with slightly different wording, so I decided to include the one with the reference to Carl Gustav Jung (and yes, I had to look it up), leaving the one which indicates that you teach at Central St Martens. What do you teach? Philosophy? Psychiatry? Russian studies?
